Lion John A. Manning was elected District Governor at the Sub District Convention in April, 2008.

District Governor Manning joined the Port Charlotte Lions Club in 2001 and has maintained perfect attendance since being inducted. Lion John served two terms as club president, club bulletin editor and on many other club committees. Lion John was named Lion of the Year by his club in 2003.

Lion John served his district as Zone Chair and on the committee of the Edison Festival of Lights Parade. He has served as Credentials/Elections chair for District 35-I and as Campaign SightFirst II district Co-Coordinator.

Now, in his own eloquent words;  I was born and raised in a little town in New York City called Brooklyn. It is known as the borough of Churches hence I call it God’s country. I attended the public schools of Brooklyn and eventually graduated from one of the more famous High Schools, Boys High. I attended Long Island University for a brief period not staying long enough to get a degree. At the age of 20 I started working for the Federal Government at the Social Security Administration. I started there as a file clerk and after attending RCA Institute I became a Computer Operator, Computer Programmer and eventually retired as a Branch Manager. At Social Security I met and married my wife of 20 years and that union
produced two children, a daughter and son. My daughter has given me three beautiful granddaughters.

My next job for 12 years was with a brokerage firm, named Salomon Brothers as a Tech Support Analyst. After retirement from Salomon Brothers, I eventually moved to Port Charlotte, Florida and in Sept. of 2000 and became a member of the Port Charlotte Lions Club. I also currently volunteer as a driver for meals-on-wheels, a disaster recovery aid for RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Persons), and the Visually Impaired persons of Charlotte County. Volunteering has given a new meaning to my life because I believe, as one PDG likes to say, I am my brothers keeper.

My Lion experience has been most rewarding, not only in terms of helping our clients but, meeting other people who have the same desire to give Something back. As a lion I can say that somewhere in this world Lions are preserving sight every day.

Lion John is a Melvin Jones Fellow and resides in Port Charlotte.
